Students who are motivated and looking for a challenge can audition for several honor bands or orchestras. These provide a great experience for students who rehearse and perform alongside some of the best student musicians under conductors who are fantastic educators. A list of audition music for each instrument is published in the Spring by the organization that runs each Honor group. Audition signups are done through the band and strings directors and students cannot signup directly. See below for more information. In 2023, Los Cerritos had 12 All-County students, 2 All-Southern students and 9 All-State students.
Ventura County Honor Band auditions are open to any 6th,7th or 8th grade band student (string bass students from the string orchestra can also audition). The audition music is the same as for All-State. Students sign up for the audition in December. Auditions are held in person in January at Redwood Middle School in Thousand Oaks. The audition consists of a prepared piece of music, 3 scales and sight-reading (reading a piece of music that the student has never seen before). Each middle school is limited to no more than auditioning 20 students. In the event that more than 20 wish to audition, they will be pre-screened to check their preparedness for the audition and determine which 20 students will participate. If selected, the students will attend four rehearsals and perform in a concert (usually held in Ventura).
